My new obsession with Dahlias
The Delightful Allure of Dahlias.
I have Katie at Little Lyndoch Flower Farm to thank for my new obsession.
We had dahlias in the garden at Marybank. Every summer, this one clump of dahlias would pop up. The flowers were a hot pink, small double flower and had petals that looked like they were being eaten by bugs. I didn't realize it was a dahlia at the time.
Then I met Katie. She was starting her flower journey and was setting up a floral arbour for a wedding on the property. I followed her page and her journey. When she had her first tuber sale, I bought a mixed dahlia pack. WOW! The number of flowers that grew and watching them grow was amazing and made me feel good. At the time, Mum was unwell, so this was something that made me feel good. I could pick flowers and gift them to Mum.
I discovered that Dahlias are the perfect choice when looking to add a burst of vibrant color to any garden. These gorgeous flowers effortlessly embody nature's splendor, bringing an air of elegance and charm to the garden here at Marybank. With an extensive range of captivating colours, dahlias are sure to uplift your spirit and delight the eye for you too.
Dahlias are renowned for more than just their striking colors. Their intricate patterns and shapes only add to their allure, mesmerizing onlookers with their exquisite details. Dahlias come in a variety of stunning forms, including single, cactus, pompom, and decorative varieties, offering garden enthusiasts an array of options to choose from.
There are many different types of dahlias, with a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. From small pom-pon dahlias to giant dinner plate dahlias, there's a dahlia for everyone. And with so many options available, it's easy to see why I became so obsessed with collecting dahlia tubers. I also joined the Dahlia Society of SA and discovered I am not alone. There are lots of people with the same obsession.
One of the great things about dahlias is that they are relatively easy to grow and quite hardy. When planting dahlia tubers, it's important to keep in mind that they prefer well-draining soil. I plant on a slight slope and by adding compost or other organic matter to the soil can help improve its drainage and fertility. Water your dahlias regularly, but be careful not to overwater them, as they can rot.
With a little bit of care and attention, your obsession (like mine) with buying dahlia tubers can result in a stunning display of beautiful, vibrant flowers in your garden. So don't be afraid to indulge - your garden will thank you for it!
