My Flower Journey

‘Joy Burkitt’ which I sourced the tuber from Little Lyndoch Flower Farm

A wonderful pure white decorative. A great cut flower.

A really proud moment for me xx

2022 was a year of reflection. Mum had just passed that Boxing Day 2021 and here we were living in her home, tending to her garden and stepping into her footsteps. Holy Shit! If it wasnt enough caring for her, making sure dad was okay, then losing her and then to just go on living. Looking back was not on the cards, way too heart-breaking as is writing this blog but mum was never one for dwelling on the past. So to honour her we all just picked up our gardening tools and planned for the future of Marybank.

Mum originally planted 2 rows of LEUCADENDRON’s around 30 plants with the idea of selling wholesale to florists. Instead she ended up making garden bouquets for friends, my wedding, the Adelaide Club, my school events. Really just for something to keep her busy and because she loved flowers. I remember she would always have freshly picked flowers from the garden every week in the house. I was so pre-occupied with my own life, filled with kids, a hospitality business that I didnt understand.

I understand now….I find myself doing the very same thing! So with mum gone and a huge garden to tend to which by the way I have always loved gardening. there is something so satifactory about weeding, tidying, pruning, creating, getting muddy and generally sitting alone in the garden sweating and thirsty over your hard work. That no one else can see but yourself. Weird….right?

In the final year that mum was sick, I planted a Dahlia patch, sunflowers and a few annuals like Zinnia & Cosmos. So much joy from seeds, to sprouting green plants to flowers. It gave me purpose and also was a way to make me smile with so much pain going on. A lovely friend also gifted me some ‘Teddy Bear’ Sunflower seeds.

I took a chance and enroled in Floret Farm’s online Flower Course for 2023. I had the basics but craved more.

Following your gut is hard and I’m only at the beginning. I have plans of PYO Bouquet Workshops and maybe supplying to a local florist.

Anyway, wish me luck!
